FAQ

Is the book available in print and where can I get a copy?

It is not available in print yet, but it will be soon. We are finalising publishing and distribution details, including local printing options through a print-on-demand model in multiple countries to minimise transport costs. It is very important to us to keep it as local and sustainable as possible. All details will be on this website.

I am having problems downloading the files. Can you help please?

Sometimes the bigger files may get disrupted in the downloading stage if the internet is slow or intermittent. If this happens try choosing the smaller file size. If the problem continues try downloading volumes or individual chapters instead. We don’t place a limit on how many times you obtain a download link or what you choose to download.

If you have unsuccessfully tried downloading a few times and your emailed download link stops working, it means that the link has expired. Each download link only lasts for a set period of time. Please obtain another link if you need to, there are no extra costs involved.

If you keep having problems, please contact us.

What is the difference between this guidebook and the original guidebook?

The original guidebook, printed in 2006 and 2008 in Timor-Leste and 2007 in Indonesia is specific for those countries and the people. The new international edition has had the entire text updated including adding many new techniques and strategies, the existing chapters have been restructured with new chapters also added and there is a much stronger focus on design. Importantly the entire text has been adapted and generalised to fit with all tropical countries and the different tropical sub-climates that make up the vast and varied tropical region.

Is the original 2008 book available?

Unfortunately there are no copies left of the original book to purchase and we won’t be printing it again in English. The good news is that the new international edition is now available. We think is much better than the old one!

How much is a whole book set?

We believe that anyone should be able to access our book, and are making it available for those who cannot afford to pay. People can ‘pay what they can’ for the book via the links on the download page. We have suggested donations for the individual chapters, volumes and the complete set for different users. For individuals we ask $5 USD a chapter, $25 for a volume or $60 for the entire guidebook. For organisations who will use the guidebook for programmes and education we ask a larger contribution commensurate to what the guidebook will be used for. These contributions are vital for us to funding the future of the guidebook and translating into other languages, and each contribution enables continued free access for those with no money.

How can I donate to the guidebook?

We operate using the third permaculture ethic of Fair Share and ask people to ‘pay what they can’ in exchange for downloading. There are recommended amounts for various users, but downloaders can choose what they will contribute. All money goes towards this project – translating and reformatting new language versions, maintain and update the website and work with NGOs, education institutions, farmers and community groups across the tropical world to put this guidebook to practical use.

Will the book be available in different languages?

Our goal to have it in many languages and this work has already commenced. We are currently raising funds and starting work to develop a Tetum language version, to be used by its ‘home’ country, Timor-Leste. Following that will be Spanish, Portuguese, French and various national languages. It is a big effort, not just for translating but to re-design and reformat the guidebook into each language. We will be creating partnerships to enable this to happen and ensure that high quality versions are produced. All new language versions will be available on this website.

Please read our Languages page for more information.

Can I offer my services as a translator?

We will be looking to partner with organisations to develop versions of the book in different languages. This will including translating and editing the text as well as proofing the new layouts and translating the illustration captions. If you are interested and would like to chat with us about our translation processes, please contact our team.

Please read our Languages page for more information.

Are you interested in being a partner for my project?

We look forward to working with projects and organisations across the tropical region, and already have many links in place. We can not offer any financial support to partners, but can offer support with how to make best use of our resources, how to develop education programmes and links to other organisations. We are also closely connected with the new International Permaculture Education Network (IPEN) https://www.permaculture.org.uk/ipen

I am interested in visiting Timor-Leste and/or volunteering on permaculture projects in Timor-Leste, can you help me?

There are a lot of permaculture projects and related groups and businesses. Here are some projects and places in Timor-Leste. Have a look on their Facebook pages to see what’s going on. Please be aware that due to the sporadic and unreliable internet connection in Timor-Leste it may take time for these groups to reply.
